ANNUAL CLUB OVERNIGHT/PACK TRIP July 15-17
This years overnight will be held the weekend of July 15-17 at Cranberry Backcountry. We will gather at the horse-freindly Summit Lake campsite on Thursday (7/14) night. On Friday morning we will do a short shuttle to the trailhead along the Cranberry River. The first days ride will be true pack trip and be aprox. 13 miles along the river (flat and easy!) to the Dogway shelter. There will be some grass and plenty of water for the horses, but you'll have to pack enough food and shelter for yourself (the shelter can hold ~7 people will fill up fast!) and you may want to consider taking some grain for your horses (there will be plenty of highline sites). The second day will be ~10 miles of easy slight uphill back to the horse camp at Summit Lake where your rigs will be waiting. This nights' dinner will be catered. Sunday will be a short 8 mile trail on top of the mountain leaving from and returning to our rigs.
Cranberry is a beautiful area .... fishing is a definite possibility along the river so bring your gear and your WV fishing licenses. If you plan on bringing a wagon, you may want to call the Forest Service and find out the condition/clearance of the Pocahontas Road from the river trail (301) to the Summit Lake horse camp. Our understanding is that it has been cleared, but ????????
The Summit campsite is a dry camp, so you'll need to haul enough water for your horses. Grazing will be limited (depending upon how many come) so make sure you bring hay for Thurs. and Sat. nights. Saturday (7/16) will be a catered dinner... bring all other meals.
Direction from Elkins: Take 219 South as if you're heading to Marlinton. Before you head down the mountain to Edray/Marlinton area, take a right onto the Scenic Highway (Rt. 150). Follow this until it ends at the Cranberry Visitor's Center. Take a right (Rt. 55) and go 17 miles until you see the sign for Summitt Lake. Take a right towards Summitt Lake. As you head up the hill, the road will fork with the lake to the left and a dirt forest service road to the right. Take the forest service road and follow it until it ends. We're at the top.
For more information, drop me an email onthefarmat40@hotmail.com We'll be emailing directions and more details closer to the event.
This trip is for Club Members only.
